‘For those about to rock ... Grade salutes you!’ Dedicated to all things heavy metal from the last five decades – from flyers to album covers, from T-shirts to instruments – The Art of Metal
is the definitive collection
and tribute to the genre.
The illustrated cover was
created in-house and employs many of the themes found in
the music: love, death, heaven and hell, resulting in a dramatic visual presentation and one to please all those ‘headbangers’ out there.
Lavishly illustrated, this book celebrates the huge range of ‘punk’ design created for posters, flyers, album cover art, fanzines and fashion from the 1970s to present day. To create a unique visual approach to the title, we developed a bespoke typeface
to be employed on all main headings and designed and illustrated a distinctive graphic approach which conveyed the ‘DIY’ aesthetic of many of the works included in the book.
'All the heroes of British music graphics are here, including Hipgnosis, Barney Bubbles, Michael Garrett and Peter Saville. Caution: the psychedelic green-orange DayGlo cover is as eye-watering as a protracted guitar solo.'
'This is a truly wonderful book
for anybody who's ever looked
at an album sleeve or advert
and thought, maybe even unconsciously, how great it not only sounds but looks. Designs like these are the mark of genius - and sadly these days, there's
far too little of that around.'
